Rebekah Shafer: Fantasy Author

Voyages into the Magical Unknown

About The Author

Rebekah Shafer is a thirty-something-year-old living in Georgia, USA, who got tired of spending an awful lot of time and energy trying to Be an Adult the Right Way.

Now she writes stories in a small house painted green and blue on the inside, with plenty of jazz vinyl albums, a problematic front lawn, and two grey cats who look just enough alike to confuse house guests.

Rebekah began creating stories at a very young age, complete with crayon illustrations and fairytale magic, but it wasn’t until she reached early teens that she began putting enough time and effort into writing to be considered A Real Author. She hopes to have evolved into the final boss form “Professional Author” before another fourteen or fifteen years go by.

About the Novel Flavor

If you pick up a Shafer story, you can expect a magic-touched world that feels just a little different then the usual fantasy realms. Shafer grew up on classic sword-and-cloak High Fantasy novels, and while they forever hold a special place in her heart, the newer styles of narrative and exploring alternative settings and magic systems hold the highest place in writing her fiction. Along with strong characters who have interesting nuance and distinctive voices, you will find plots that deal more with individuals then massively epic and distant wars.

And while there might be a smattering of language or violence, it’s not gratuitous. Shafer believes in balancing the darker parts of story with light, fear with beautiful moments, and sadness with joy. A good story needs a full range of emotions and images to convey its snippet of life.

She also believes in the importance of representation when it comes to mental health topics in the context of adventure fiction. A superpower that feels suspiciously like anxiety features in Sea of Purple Ink, while The Luck Child gives a gentle nod to high-functioning depression.
